Cathedrals or Bricks?

In class you watched a video from HLN about Cooper that I used to talk about being excited for the "NEW."  Click on the link to watch it again.  It's a NEW semester and I want you to be excited for NEW material and NEW challenges. You have 5 more months in Biology to do great things.  What mindset do you plan on driving you? READ the story below:

"Once there were 3 bricklayers. Each one of them was asked what they were doing. The first man answered gruffly, 'I'm laying bricks.'The second man replied, 'I'm putting up a wall.'But the third man said enthusiastically and with pride, 'I'm building a cathedral.'" --Author Unknown

To summarize, when you face challenges, when you feel discouraged, when you feel like you will never reach success, remember the story of The Three Bricklayers and evaluate your mindset and visualize the "Big Picture!"  Look at your challenges as an opportunity to do great things and celebrate, like Cooper, the fact that you do have a new semester ahead of you.

Attitude: "...mastering change rather than allowing it to master you." It's all in your attitude!

See the "Big Picture:" "Give yourself an even greater challenge than the one you are trying to master and you will develop the strength necessary to overcome the original difficulty." William Bennett

1. Describe what you LEARNED about yourself as a student during 1st Semester.

2. What are your GOALS for 2nd semester? How can you move closer to the completion of that cathedral? What can you do differently? What can you TEACH those around you? Inspire your classmates and yourself with your response.

  1. During the 1st semester in Biology I learned a lot about myself and how I learn, some of those things include that I take good useful notes that I can use to study for, but on the other hand, I learned that I can improve my learning by studying more often before a test or quiz. Some of my goals going into the 2nd semester is really focusing on the task at hand and completing work with 100% effort, another goal of mine is to start studying more often before tests to really show what I learned. Everytime I show up to Biology with a mindset to learn and focus I bring myself closer and closer to building that “cathedral”. Others can possibly benefit from what my new goal is and bring themselves even closer to that final objective.

  2. during 1st semester I learned that biology is not my strong suit. I struggle with it, trying to put everything together and see why all the information I'm learning is so important. It's a lot to take in at once, but I want to get better. I want to end with a high B in the class for 2nd semester and overall have a better understanding of it going into junior year. It's a difficult subject for me, but I will get better at it.

  3. Something that I learned about myself as a student last semester was that I need to stay on top of my schoolwork, or else I may have a hard time catching up. To stay on schedule with my work and my life, I need to stay organized and stay focused. I also learned that even though it may be hard to ask for help, it is good to go in to get help from a teacher when you need it.

A few goals I have for this semester are to stay organized, not to let time run away from me, and to put my full effort into everything that I do. I can move closer to the completion of my cathedral by telling myself that I am working/learning for many reasons. I am learning for my benefit, and I am learning for the benefit of the people that my future job may help. I am working for my education, and I am working toward a job that I am interested in and that I enjoy. Last semester I was not very organized, and I forgot to do many of the tasks that I should have done. I hope that this semester I follow through with my goals.

  4. Last semester I learned that I need to review my notes often, even if there isn’t a test or quiz coming up because I didn’t always understand the concepts or I would forget what we learned in class. I hope that by reviewing the content in class, I won’t have to cram so much for tests and I will have a clearer understanding of the topic. I also learned that when I cram the night before a test, I usually don’t have a very good grasp of the concepts.

My upcoming goals for this semester are too take better notes and review them more often, as well as to go in for help when I still do not understand the topic. I believe I can get an A in this class if I focus more and hold myself accountable. I can teach those around me to ask for help, or help teach them if they need it.

  5. Last semester I learned that biology is a challenging subject for me because I thought that the cells were very complicated and that I need to review my notes more because then I will be more prepared for class conversations and quizzes.

My goals are to keep up to date with reviewing my notes and do well on every knowledge check. I can go into the science office more when I need help because it will help me understand the concept. I think I can really help my learning group understand stuff that might be confusing.

  6. During first semester I learned a lot about the way I learn and what parts of biology are harder for me to comprehend. I learned that notes are not the best way for me to learn but with diagrams and pictures and being able to visualize in my brain what is going on and connecting the dots, I become a better learner/student.Some concepts this unit were very difficult for me but going into the school year I knew that would not be a surprise because I have always struggled with science. watching the video I have realized at the beginning of last semester me coming in with the outlook of not doing good was me putting up walls. This semester I will try to build a cathedral.

My goals are to try to understand the material in a different way and to improve my outlook on science this year. For those around me I can try to ask questions, along with help to answer them.

  7. The first semester was very difficult for me. I struggled in some of my classes very much, and my grades were my prison. I was self-conscious of a couple of my grades, but I learned that I need to balance my happiness. I did the best I could, but I also focused on what brings me joy. I learned how to balance life.

My goals are to make sure I do the best I can and work hard, no matter what the outcome looks like. I can teach others that their best is enough, and nothing else matters.

  8. Last semester I learned that biology is difficult for me because I found some things very complicated such as photosynthesis and cellular respiration. I also learned that I need to go over my notes before tests and study the information before taking knowledge checks, as well as raising my hand when I have a question.

My goals for this semester are to take good notes so that way when something confuses me I can go back in my notes and find the answer myself. Another goal I can set for myself would be to study multiple nights before quizzes vs. trying to cram the information all into one night. With these goals, I think I will be able to achieve a successful semester in science.

  9. I learned last semester that Biology was more confusing than I thought it would be. A lot of the vocabulary and processes dealing with cells was confusing at the start but as I kept practicing, I learned a lot more than I thought I would. I’m sure that this next semester will have a lot more new vocabulary and even more processes which I am excited to learn because now I know that if I am confused with them at all I can just continue to practice with the vocab to help learn it faster.

What I’m really excited for this semester is just learning more stuff about living things that I wouldn’t have known before. I don’t really have one certain goal in mind I am just here to learn, and what comes with learning is also doing well on the knowledge checks, Quizzes, and Tests to make sure that I am I have a “secure” knowledge of the topics and that I am actually being taught the right things.

  10. During 1st semester, I learned that I am not the best at studying for Biology. I didn’t do very well on tests because I didn’t study enough to really know the material well to do good on a test or quiz. I always ended up having to do interventions because I got the material when we learned about it in class, but when it came to the test, I couldn't remember or apply the things we had learned in class.

My goal for this semester is to get a high B in the class, and get at least an 80 on tests. I will study more than I think I need. I will also look at the biology podcasts so that I can understand the topic better than I would just taking notes in class. I will listen better in class so that when I do study, I understand the topic completely.

  11. During the first semester, I learned that I do best in class when I am engaged and consistently applying what is being talked about...like taking notes mentally or on paper. If I just sit and listen, nothing sinks in. I also benefited from the weekly learning checks because I could clearly see where I was and what I did or didn’t understand. Although I didn’t necessarily change as a student and learn anything about myself, I was reassured that I succeed when staying on top of things and not procrastinating, something that came in handy when studying for finals, for I just had to review instead of cram an entire semester’s learning into a couple of hours. My goals for second-semester biology consist of getting good grades and being able to answer questions without looking at notes or definitions, knowing the topics enough to connect them to everyday life. I feel like I am on track to building my cathedral, brick by brick, by maintaining good habits and using resources. We have to be in class anyway, so slacking off and not completing things that are simply handed to you is a bigger waste than what you might think the assignment is. I wish to teach others indirectly by being a good role model, staying positive, and being attentive, as well as directly by helping learn and understand concepts whenever I can.

  12. I learned so much in biology this past semester. But not only did I learn all the information but I learned a ton about myself as a student and just how hard I have to work to get a grade I am satisfied with. I realized the amount of work I have to put in, to get that A or B on a test is more than I would normally have to study for any other class.

My first goal is to start the semester very strong and do the best I can in everything I do. Last semester I wish I began the semester stronger and got my grade high to begin with. I want a good starting point to go off, so I don’t have to worry too much at the end of this semester. In labs, knowledge checks, and all the smaller assignments I am prepared to put 100% effort into them because they all add up and can affect my grade immensely. Last semester I wasn’t ready for the tests and the difficulty of them so now I am ready and know that I need to go in and ask for help, look at previous notes, watch podcasts, and complete the study guide in order to get a good grade. And as for during class I am ready to be more engaged in the actual learning and not letting myself just write it down without really understanding the content. I found that my studying techniques during finals paid off more rather than when I was taking the unit tests. Simply because I forced myself to make sure I knew all the content and knew what I was taking my test on. To get a good grade in the class I know I have to know exactly what I am doing in each theme to understand the themes coming after.

  13. 1. I learned a lot and how to study a little better. Also that going to get help actually helps.
    2. To be more successful this semester I plan to get more help and make sure I know what is going on. Also study more often then just right before a test. Taking better notes would also help.

  14. 1) I learned a lot on how to take my own notes and what to copy down that was beneficial to me. It really helped when I made some extra side notes and I kept all of my notes organized, so I could easily find them and use them.
    2) This semester I would really like to try and study more. Even though I do all the assignments and I take good notes, I would like to try and go above and try making Quizlets or something that could strengthen my knowledge. I would like to try and put 110% effort into this semester and finish strong.

  15. During 1st semester I learned that I can do really well in any of my classes as long as I pay attention and make an effort to do good work. When I don’t pay attention or I don’t put any effort into school, I begin to see my grades drop. In 1st semester I also figured out that if I put effort into taking good notes in class and I stay organized, I do much better overall.
My main goals are to pay attention and stay organized throughout the rest of the year. I know that I can get great grades if I just do the work that I’m asked to do. My main problems last year were that I began to slack off at some point which forced me to scramble to get my grades up before finals and I was not as organized as I wanted/needed to be.

  16. During first semester, I learned that I can do really well in a class if I stay engaged in the discussion and pay attention in class. I have a harder time remembering content when I was not engaged in class that day. Some goals I have for second semester are to keep paying attention in class and ask more questions for clarification on a topic.I can reach this goal by being brave to ask a lot of questions in class if I do not understand the topic.I can teach my classmates around me to continue paying attention by telling them to get on task if I notice that they are off task.I think that I could achieve my goals if I stay on task and engaged in the class throughout the semester.

  18. During First Semester I learned that I don't need to be so uptight but that I shouldn't be lazy about my grades and work. This semester I strive to do my best in class. I will be less lazy and make sure that I complete every assignment I can. I can achieve this by not zoning out in class and making sure I take better and more complete notes, and if needed I can ask more questions in class. I will reach out for help if I need it and I look forward to this next semester!

  19. During first semester, I learned a lot about how I learn and study best. Observation and subtle mental note taking actually seemed to work in my case and I'm glad I figured it out, even though I'm technically from another class.
My main goal for second semester would be try and talk more and interact with my group and the class as a whole. Hopefully I could break out a little bit more. Completing my "Cathedral" really just stays in the circle of being and staying positive.

  20. Throughout first semester I learned a lot about what is to come in high school, and the following semesters. I learned that I may have to use my time more wisely and focus on classes like biology, instead of other classes on my agenda.
My goal for second semester is to finish the class with a B or higher, and learn how to study and have fun while doing it.

  21. I learned that, as a student, I am a very hard working and always try my best to learn not only new content, but to still remember the old. I also learned how to manage my time and my classes as well. My goal for this semester is to finish out the year with all A's and have fun throughout the year.

  22. This past semester I learned how to balance my time between hockey, school, and friends. In biology I learned that is important to review my notes even if a test is not coming up. I also learned that going in to ask questions is very beneficial. In the next semester, one of my goals is to continue putting in full effort and maintain the desire to get good grades. Remembering the big goal will be beneficial for me when keeping this goal throughout the semester.

  23. During the first semester, I learned a lot about myself through my failures and my triumphs. One thing that I learned was that if I tried hard and studied that I could do well. I also learned that if I didn't focus 100 percent during the class I ended up with a lot of homework and questions about the material. I also learned that procrastination is my biggest enemy. When I procrastinate studying and doing homework I didn't do as well and my grades reflected that.

My goal for second semester is to use my class time to the fullest that it can be and come to class everyday with a good attitude that is ready to learn. Lastly I want to not procrastinate and not leaving studying till the night before the test. I think that through doing these things that I can be a better student and understand the biology material much more.

  24. During first semester, what I learned about myself is that if I put enough effort in, I'll be able to get through anything. Even though there were good moments I still need to learn how to manage my time better to reduce stress.

My Goal for second semester is to ask questions when i need it and to practice everything that we learn as soon as I can so I don't become stressed from waiting so long to study. With these goals, I will be able to become a better student and be more confident in what I kow.

  26. Throughout the semester I found out that if I work hard then I can get great grades.

  27. I don’t think that I really learned anything new about myself from the previous semester other than my growing distaste in biology class. My goals for this semester is to go into the science office and get help when I don’t understand something. The biggest thing is to probably ask more questions in class because I often am confused about some things, and since I didn’t any clarification on those things I didn’t do as well I as I wanted to last semester.

  28. During the first semester, I learned many important things about the way I learn, interact with adversity, and enjoy biology. When I first came into class I thought biology was going to be a breeze, but I struggled with some of the more complex ideas we’ve studied. In order to fix this, I tried my best to ask as many questions as possible and use outside resources when I needed them. This shows that in the face of academic adversity I don’t give up, but rather try my hardest to understand a certain topic. Also, a big help for me in my struggles with some of the topics in biology was my love for it. Learning about how life works on this plant and how it has evolved pushed me to understand more difficult topics.

In the second semester, I wish to improve upon my knowledge of biology, be able to apply first semesters information to this new semesters topics, and do that in a manner that is more efficient. While learning more about biology applies to the first semester as well as the second semester, the application and connection of both semesters is something I now wish to do. This application and connection will further strengthen my knowledge of biology from only certain parts of it to a full cohesive understanding of its basic principles. In order for me to accomplish this goal, I need to make myself more efficient by asking more questions when needed, studying more, etc.

  29. during first semester, I learned that the study habits I used to use may not work for me as well as I thought they would, so I'm hoping to find new ones that make me more successful as a student. A few goals I have for second semester include; bringing my gpa up to a cumulative 3.5 or higher, showing up to every class, and bettering my knowledge of biology by taking adequate notes and paying closer attention.

  30. After the first semester of biology and school I realized that I need to get my organization skills so I don’t forget to do easy assignments and get easy points. If I improve my organization I feel that will help excel this semester and show my full potential. Last semester I forgot to do one or two assignments that ended up costing me the grade I wanted. I will also make sure that I am giving one hundred percent of my effort to my school work. Last semester at times I didn't try as hard as I could have in certain times throughout the semester.

One of my main goals for all of my classes this semester is to stay organized. Last semester that was what held me back from having my full potential. If I can stay organized that will greatly help me succeed this semester and show my full ability and potential. Another one of my goals is to give all of my effort through every assignment I do even if it is just some small assignment. At times last semester I didn't give all of the effort that I could have given at times. To make sure I keep trying to strive for these goals I just have to make sure that I am doing what I need to be doing and ultimately just keeping myself in check.

  31. In the first semester I learned that procrastination simply leads to falling behind. If I got my work done the day it was assigned, then later in the week my workload would be low. If I pile everything up for one night and then I get stressed and lose sleep. I also learned that staying organized is very important. There is no way that I can remember everything I need to do for six classes. Using my planner helps a lot and keeps me on top of my work.

My goals for this semester are to stay organized and on top of my work, put in full effort, and go in for help. Sometimes I will get lazy and not put in my best effort, but this semester I want to try hard by studying and asking questions. I will try to get my homework done as soon as I can so I don’t fall behind. I can teach others around me that hard work pays off. Last semester I feel like I put in a lot of effort and I ended up with all A’s, barley. You earn what you work for. In conclusion, in these next few months I hope to be organized and have a mindset that hard work pays off!

  32. I learned a lot about my work ethic this semester. I started off the semester by working super hard in all my classes. Towards the end of the semester, I started to work with a worse work ethic and try less in my classes. I realized that this was the easier way out, however not the best for me. I began working hard again to achieve my goals and it paid off in the end. I learned that I need to maintain my work ethic throughout the whole semester in order to keep my stress levels down.

My goal for second semester is to receive the same grades I did first semester. I am trying to get these same grades in order to lay the foundation for getting into the college of my choice. I want to continue to keep all my options open on what I want to do with my life, and in order to do this I must continue to receive good grades. Working hard not only helps me now, it helps me get the future I want. I can teach those around me about work ethic and what needs to be done to get where they want to in life. People can oversee the hard work I'm doing, and it might make them want to work equally as hard. You can achieve anything you want if your willing to work hard enough for it.

  34. During 1st semester in bio, I learned so much about myself. I learned that going in for help and using my time more efficiently really paid off in the end. Going in for help to learn something I was confused about in a different way or getting it explaining to me in more depth really benefited me. I was able to ask questions when I went in for help that didn’t get answered during class for me. I learned that doing the study guide before we got the answer key and highlighting questions I didn’t understand also really benefited me in a way. Even though bio stressed me out a lot in the end I really learned that my stress made things worse and using my time to go in to reduce my stress really helped.

My goals for this semester are to first start second semester off strong. Also, I want to be more engaged during class. For me this means being more engaged in group discussions and in class discussions and not just writing down the notes or what others say. I want to be able to make sure I am understanding the content right and if I am confused I can get it clarified right then. Another goal is to put in 100% of my effort in this class and not just a little. When I put in 100% effort it paid off way more during a test rather than studying a little and hoping I do well. This semester I also want to work on my stress. I stressed about everything last semester and it only made things worse. Being positive and telling myself I can do it and being confident I think will help make my stress levels go down a lot. To be able to get a good grade in this class I will start off strong, be more engaged in class and put more effort into my work.

  37. During first semester, I learned that I can try my hardest on a test and study prior to it and still not get a perfect score. This further taught me not to attach my self worth to my grades and to rather be fine with me trying my best. I also learned that it is ok to ask for help from teachers or friends because everyone learns at their own pace and people struggle in different areas. Ignoring the areas you struggle in early on only causes you to stress over them more in a final or test.

My goals for second semester is to not get comfortable in not trying my hardest in Biology after getting a good score on a test. I want to push myself the whole semester so I won’t feel as stressed during finals this spring. Another goal is to constantly review my notes and maybe even organize them better so that I can review them quicker for finals instead of combing through pages and pages of notes looking for an answer. My last goal for second semester is to be more aware of when I attach my grade to my worth. I want to work on keeping my confidence even if I end up not getting an A this semester.

  38. During my first semester of Biology I realized I enjoy some things but not others. Like I loved genetics but I was less interested in evolution. I also realized that I always did my work but if I was confused I do not take the opportunity to challenge myself. I did not let myself fail. Also, I studied really hard even if I did not want to but I did not focus on learning the material. In my second semester I would love to strive to be a better student and really come into class with the right mind set of having fun but still working. And even on the boring days stay focused and “build the cathedral”. Also, understanding the topic before I move on because everything builds so do not wait till the last second to understand something. I can help those around me by telling them that putting in the effort now will help you in the long run. It will make finals week easier.

  39. During 1st semester, I learned that I have a specific learning style when it comes to studying and retaining information. When I take notes, I like to keep everything organized and draw all the diagrams and pictures, as well. Visuals/examples and thoroughly written descriptions truly help me understand the information faster. I also learned that I need to be studying the notes and knowledge checks consistently rather than prior to the day before a test/quiz to take a lot of stress away.

My goal for this semester is to learn from last semester and focus on studying or clarifying material at a constant rate, not just cramming it into one day. Bringing me closer to “building the cathedral” would consist of less procrastination. And with this, another goal of mine is to have a better attitude about studying. Putting in a little work day by day is a more efficient process. To possibly help teach others around me, I’ll try my best to help out to answer questions that pop up so that we all understand what we are learning before moving to a new topic.

  40. During the first semester, I learned a lot about my optimal learning conditions and the best ways for me to learn. I found that asking questions and engaging in class conversations helped me to focus and learn the content very efficiently. My goal for second semester is not only to succeed by getting good grades, but keep myself accountable for doing the best I can rather than settling for a good grade. My “cathedral” in terms of this class is preparing myself for the following years of science. I know that classes like AP Bio are very challenging and I need to adequately prepare myself for classes like that. The main thing I want to do differently is to stay focused for often in class, because I need to remember that succeeding in this class does not help me too much with doing well in later classes.

  41. During 1st semester, I learned that I need to be more responsible about doing and turning in my work on time. My goals for 2nd semester are to stay on top of my school work, to take opportunities when available, and to revise and review older material to prepare myself for the future. What I plan on doing differently specifically revolves around my school work in terms of I should revise assignments I didn't do as well I as would have liked to on. My advice for others would be: work for the things you want, even if they are challenging and you feel as if they are out of reach. Believe me, they aren't.

  42. In my first semester of high school I learned several things about school and myself. I took the first few weeks to learn what stratagies were going to work for me in high school. In biology specifically I found that the knowledge checks helped me understand what I knew and what I need to study a bit more. I also found that good note taking would not only help me study, but it also helped me comprehend the content better. In the first semester I realized that there is a large difference between high school and middle school. This made me have to put in some more effort than I did in middle school. At the end of the semester my hard work and effort paid off. I need to continue that through the rest of my high school. My main goal for second semester is to do all my homework the night that it is assigned. Last semester I found myself procrastinating far to much and it made for some late nights. I also have made it a goal to stay more organized. Several times last semester I got caught unprepared due to my unorganization. Throughout the semester I will check in with myself on how I am doing with my goals.

  43. In first semester, I learned that if I study for only a few minutes each day, it is easier to know the material for tests. For me, the tests were harder when I tried to study all in one night, and my grades showed that. Also, if I pay better attention during the classes then I will not have to study as hard for everything. My goals for second semester are to study ahead and not leave everything for the last night and also to pay better attention in each class.

  44. 1. Last semester I learned how I thrive in a school environment and the steps I need to take to succeed. Last semester in Biology, I wasn't doing as well as I would have liked, and I learned that I need to apply my energy more in the things I struggled at.

    2. For second semester, I plan on getting a 4.0 and truly retaining the knowledge that I pick up. Last year, finals were stressful because I forgot what I learned, so this semester, I will try to apply my knowledge to everything in order to retain information.

2.I hope to this semester have a more clear idea of deadlines and how to stay on top of missing assignments. Finals is also something i would like to be ready for.

  46. In the first semester, I learned a lot about myself and how I study and learn. I can actually do a lot more things as long as I put my mind to it. I also learned that i'm a fast learner i just try to do so much at once that it slows me down. One goal that I have for this semester is to slow down because I focus too much on what I need to write down that I don't actually understand the material. So when i go back to look at notes to study, I don't fully get it. So something that i can do differently is to just take a breath and just listen to what is being taught instead of trying to write everything I see/hear.

  47. During first semester I learned I need to ask more questions when I don’t understand and do more to understand the topic and not rely on myself to teach it to myself. I need to push myself to understand the topic in class and if I don’t, push myself to go in for help and get it described to me in a new and different way. I learned that I need to give 100% all the time not just in biology, but in every subject.

One of my goals for second semester is to focus whenever I have work and not get distracted by my phone or my friends. I need to push myself to get my work done efficiently because when I cram all my work in towards the due date or the end I don’t relearn or learn the subject and it sets me up for being unsuccessful in the future.

  49. Last semester, I learned that if I work really hard, I can achieve more than I think I can. Science is usually a really difficult and frustrating subject for me, so I didn’t really think that I would do well this year. However last semester, I learned how to take notes that really helped me understand the themes. I also found multiple study methods that worked well, like making quizlets, talking about the themes with my learning group, and looking through questions I’ve missed on past concept checks. These studying methods really helped me, which showed in my test scores. I was able to earn an A last semester, but more importantly I was able to greatly improve and start to feel more confident in science.

This semester I want to continue to push myself and stay motivated the entire semester, so that I can continue to improve. I also think I need to have a better mindset. I always think that I can’t do things just because they seem hard. I need to understand that even if something seems hard, it’s never impossible. If you work hard for it and have a good mindset towards it, you will be able to achieve whatever you want to.

  50. During the first semester, I learned that I need to take good notes and stay on top of my school work, or it will be very hard to catch up. Also that I need to stay organized, focused and take good notes.
My Goals for second semester are to stay organized, motivated and work hard. I also want to take better notes/study hard, and shoot for all As. I want to do as best as possible for second semester, because I lost almost all my motivation during first semester.

  51. During the first semester I learned that studying is crucial, after the first test I thought I would get by without it. Later on I regretted not spending enough time reviewing class work. During the second semester I want to achieve an A in the class once again, and I need to follow through with what I was doing well, bt at the same time I need to implement things like studying into my day.

  52. IN the first semester I learned that if I don't study and think it's going to be easy that it will affect my grade. This unfortunately meant that I didn't get the grade I wanted to in this class. In Second semester want to push myself to stay focus while studying and to think about what I'm trying to achieve with studying for tests. I also want to get an A in the class and really understand the concepts that are taught.

  54. I learned that stuff isn't as easy as freshman year was, but I also learned if you put your mind to anything you can easily accomplish it. My goal is to grow in biology and learn the essentials I need to, and grow off them. I will help and encourage my classmates and I will also help myself by asking questions.

  55. During 1st semester, I learned that I do my best in class when I am engaged and writing down what I don't understand. I also benefit from knowledge checks and written notes because I can just go back and learn it more myself. My goals for second semester biology consists of improving my knowledge and staying focused to know the topics enough to connect them to things that are alike. I hope to connect first semesters learning to this semesters learning. This connection will strengthen my knowledge of bio to understand the basic learning. In order to accomplish this goal, I need to be more efficient by studying more, asking questions when needed, and going in for help during off hours.

  56. During the first semester, I learned that putting actual time and effort into notes helps in the long run when studying for tests. In addition, I learned that quizlets and self check quizzes are extremely helpful in terms of success on a test. In middle school, you are able to just “wing” the tests, but in highschool you must actually put time into preparing. In the upcoming semester, I would like to continue to work hard to receive a grade that I feel proud of-it doesn’t have to be an A if I know that I tried my hardest and grew as a learner. I would also like to not procrastinate as much and continue to find new ways to continue to grow as a student and person in and out of school.

  57. In the first semester of bio, I felt as if I didn't do the best I could have. I learned that going to get help when I needed and studying was the best thing that I could do for my grade. I didn't not obtain the grade that I was hoping or in biology last semester. In second semester my goals are to go into get help when I need it. I also would like to shoot for a high B or even in A in the class. I would like to prepare better for tests to get a higher grade.

  58. In the first semester of biology, I learned that I can't just lay back and expect an A. I have to put more effort into Biology than I have in my other classes. I thought I studied hard enough during first semester but my grades did not show that, so I'm trying to study even harder this semester. My goal this semester is to get an A in this class. Last semester this was one of my two B classes, with an 87%. Hopefully from my dedication to biology this semester I can encourage others around me to try harder than they have before.

  59. In biology class first semester, I learned that class is a lot easier if you have a good attitude about it and actually want to go to class instead of just going because you have to. This semester, I want to try to participate more in class so that I can continue to do well in Biology and not fall behind.

  60. In first semester biology class, I learned that when you space long projects out and don't procrastinate them, they become a lot easier and more fun to do. You just have to have the mind set of you don't need to finish it today, but at least start it. That time management piece will continue to help out all my life. This semester I want to work even more on that time management aspect and not just blow everything off. I want to stay on top of things in my classes and end this semester with no missing assignments.

I hope that I can remember and connect things that happened in first semester into second semester.

  62. First semester I learned that I learn well by engaging in all sorts of ways: taking notes, doing projects, and being involved in discussions. Taking good notes really helps me because they are a pretty critical resource to come back and reference before a test or final. I also kept track of what I needed to study through the weekly progress checks. They really let me know what I wasn’t understanding and helped me answer the same questions I missed ( on the progress checks ) correctly on the tests. I learned that not procrastinating on assignments really relieves stress and helps make studying for finals a lot easier.
My goals for second semester are to keep putting in my work, getting good grades, and continuing to ask questions and participate. By doing all of these things, I will lay down my bricks and build and build up my cathedral. I can perhaps engage a little bit more in class, but I really just want to keep up my good habits. I hope to teach those around me that all you have to do to succeed is pay attention in class, ask questions when you’re confused, and give 100% effort. There’s really no reason you should fail if you put in the work and really try, not just to get the grade you want, but to learn too.

  63. During my first semester in biology, I learned a lot about my learning style and how I could better my studying. I found that keeping my notes organized and color-coded helped me find information easily when trying to study. My goal for the second semester is to have no missing assignments and to keep organized. Every time I can visualize my goal and think it is possible, I am moving towards “my cathedral”. I think my goal is achievable this semester I just have to stay focused and organized.

  64. I think the thing I learned the most during the first semester is the value of the people around you. Not only do they make class fun, but their questions and explanations also deepen your knowledge. I also realized that in high school, even if you are smart, studying is vital to your success. Throughout the second semester, I want to continue to help those around me, but not let them distract me from my goal of getting an A. I want to use all the resources available to me to succeed as much as possible.

  65. After the end of last semester I truly feel like I learned a lot about my learning habits, finding the best ways for me to comprehend what I am being taught. I learned about how participating in note taking improves my knowledge on tests. Beginning the second semester, I would like to focus on ensuring my grade reflects my overall learning through the course of the year. I also want to ensure that I complete my work with 100% effort, learning and most importantly understanding each assignment.

  66. During 1st semester, I learned a lot about myself as a student. I saw that when you put actual time and effort into something, and pay attention to the little details in things, the big picture is actually very easy to understand. When I went up to a biology teacher and talked to them about a specific question I had, I learned it way easier than trying to figure it out by myself and just google it. In the second semester, I want to focus on those little details every single day, because those few days that I went in and talked to a teacher or paid close attention to class material I learned things better than I ever would have. My goal is to try 100% every day, because last semester I did not, but I am ready to change that.

  67. During my first semester in Biology, I learned a lot about myself and my learning style. Going into high school I thought it was going to be easy like middle school. I learned that sitting down and watching class tic by won’t work. Biology and many classes taught me that not only being there but working hard during my time and doing work outside of class allows me to extend my potential. In the second semester, I want to actually know and understand the material and I would like to not only guess on background information but understand all parts of the test from hard work.

  68. During first semester, I learned a lot about balancing school with my personal life. I found that when I put effort into something, it made the end goal a whole lot better, but I could only put a high amount of effort into so many things. This semester, I want to focus on putting a high amount of effort into the things that mean the most, rather than putting a high amount of effort into the easiest things. I also want to put a lot more work into this class since I will likely need it more than anything else for the degree I want to pursue.

Which overall, hoping to end this semester off better than last and finish with a good grade.

  70. Last semester, I learned about myself that I learn better when I am engaged. I am a very visual learner, but last semester, I learned that when I interact more, I am able to learn a lot better. It helps me to talk things out to process them. It was helpful to be able to talk to my partner about the lesson and on assignments. I was able to process the information better and allow it to sink in. My goals for this semester are to become more confident on the content that we are learning and be able to answer questions without using my notes. I think this will help me learn better and become more confident. I can work on using all of my time to the best potential. This will help me stay on track with my work and learning. I am moving closer to the completion of my cathedral by building my confidence both academically and socially. I can teach others to be themselves because that is when they will be the most confident and happy.

  72. I learned many things about myself first semester. I think the biggest thing I learned was that I can't treat all my assignments as completion grades and that on some of the things I have to try a lot harder so that I get a good grade.

I would say my main goal for the second semester would be to get an A. Last semester Mr. Craig was extremely nice and I barely got an A so this semester I want there to be no question and not have to rely on an extra bump up. I think what killed me last semester was my labs so I definitely will step up my lab work. I think my inspiration is to grab like by the boys and work hard.

  73. Last semester I learned that I am a perfectionist, sometimes to a harmful degree. I didn't want to turn in projects or finish tests until I thought they where perfect. While I don't think it's bad to want to do good work I need to understand that I am going to make mistakes, and that other people won't hate me for that.

My Goal for this semester is to enjoy the things I'm learning. Last semester I was so concerned with doing things just right that I was too stressed to actually learn anything that stuck with me. I'm going to focus and engage myself in the topics we learn, then I think that the good work will come as a by-product.

  74. In the first semester, I learned that as myself as a student I enjoy working hard. I also can get distracted very easily and tend to do it a lot. I would sometimes accomplish a lot, but other times I would find myself confused because I wasn't focused and this would have a domino affect.

My goal for the future semester is to begin focusing better. Leaving distractions behind and trying to learn and grow even further. Even if I do get distracted I will find a way to overcome this and get back to my learning.

  75. 1. I learned that I am pretty good at remembering what we learned in class and that I am also pretty good at taking tests. I learned that I do make a lot of silly mistakes and that I know the answers a lot of the time but don’t feel confident enough to say or sometimes even think about them at all. I learned that during the 1st semester, as it progressed, I went from shy about answering questions to more confident to becoming shyer again. This was mostly because the content got a little bit harder but I didn’t get tougher and more confident along with it. I learned that I am pretty good at learning through taking notes, looking at the presentation, and listening to what is being said. In total, I learned that I am a pretty good biology student if I try and am more confident.
    2. My main goal for 2nd semester is to be more confident in class about answering questions, and if I don’t know the answer, then to think about it and try and figure it out instead of just giving up. Another goal I have for 2nd semester is to put more effort into my classwork and to try and learn and get more out of everything we do in class instead of having it mainly just fed to me through class, more effort on my part. I can move closer to the completion of the “cathedral” through constantly working hard in class and putting effort into what I am doing, along with thinking more about the big picture and thinking about how the small things I do in class each day will influence my main learning, actions, grades, and thoughts on Biology this semester. Through trying to be more confident in class about answering questions and paying more attention to the little details and how they will influence the big picture, I may influence others around me to be more confident and answer the questions more as well as maybe paying a little more attention to their actions in Biology each day.

  77. During the first semester of biology, I learned a lot about myself. I learned how to balance my time with school, family, friends, and sports. I learned how to work hard and do my best in school, but I also realized when I’ve studied enough, and when I should stop. I learned how to stay organized and balance my time really well, so that I could get more sleep and be more successful. Because it is my first year in high school, I realized that I can be successful in school, and be a successful learner, but also spend my time on sports and with my friends.

My biggest goal for second semester is to start going to bed earlier and getting more sleep. I want to do my homework as soon as I get home, and use my time as well as I can, so that I can be less tired during the day. I want to be as successful as I can be in high school, and I will be able to do that best when I am being as productive as possible. I am going to move closer to the completion of my cathedral, or the end of my education in high school, by being a good learner. If I learn how to use my time well, and use extra time to my advantage, I will be a better learner in college and beyond.

  78. During the first semester, I learned a lot about myself. One thing that I learned is that I am a procrastinator and I am currently doing this at 2:36 wednesday mourning. I also learned that I am able to do things I did not think I could before, like how I had a lot more leeway in hanging out with my friends and ect.. I also learned how to overcome certain obstacles like finals which was new for me last semester.

One of my goals from last semester is to learn from my mistakes and others. By not being so pessimistic and being optimistic and growing and learning. I wish I could procrastinate less but here I am. Try to get friends that could help you in the long run not just here and now in the moment and surround yourself with people smarter that you instead of those not as fortunate so that you could learn something. Instead of surrounding himself with a bunch of yes men one of our great presidents surrounded himself with people from the other party so that he would really think his question through and have some contradictions.

  79. During first semester I learned a lot about myself as a student. One of the most important things that I learned was how to balance out all my time to get productive work done. I have a lot of things going on in my life one of wich is probably the most time intensive activity you could possibly do at arapahoe, marching band. Our marching band practices five times a week for several hours every night or morning, not even including competitions or football games. And in the middle of this chaos I learned to balance my social, family, and school life. It formed me into a productive and (somewhat) responsible person.

One of my main goals this semester is to acheive more than I did last semester. Last year I kept up a high grade point average (3.7~) but this year I am trying to maintain straight A's. I am trying my very hardest to keep on top of all tasks I have been assighned.

One more thing I learned is to go check in with my teachers more for clarification.

Going into my second semester my goal is to make sure all my assignments are always turned in. many times I was up so late from sports and homework I could not finish all of the assignments due. I also want to do a better job of not being stressed about tests so i can calm down before the test comes.
